Review: Castagna

This might be my new, favorite neighborhood spot.

I came in on a Saturday around 11am with my parents, looking for a casual lunch/brunch before going about our day. I wasn't expecting much and this place absolutely exceeded my expectations.

The staff was SUPER friendly. They took the time to chat, to get to know us, and to make sure all of the food and drink was to our liking. Their french bread is fresh, crispy on the outside while soft and fluffy on the inside. We ordered even more later in the meal for sopping up sauce!

Eggs cocotte: 4-stars. A huge plate of baked eggs with smoked salmon, creme fraiche, and chives as well as potatoes and salad. The salad was perfectly dressed, not too much, not too little. The potatoes were perfectly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. The eggs were soft baked, surrounded by delicate smoked salmon, elevated by creamy creme fraiche and balanced out with a bit of chives. My sole complaint would be that the eggs could have been a little less well done and a little runnier, but this is comfort food at its best.

Moules nicoise: 5-stars. A heaping pile of mussels served in a tomato based broth with garlic, parsley, olives, roasted red peppers, fennel, and anchovies. Rich umami goodness that I couldn't get enough of, accompanied by crispy thin frites. Yes, yes, and more yes. This is my new favorite dish. Honestly, I'll be stopping in for this anytime I need a cozy pick-me-up.

Dad got the burger, he said it was great.

Overall, I can't tell you how thrilled I was here. It's rare that restaurants in this city surprise me anymore and this was definitely one of them.
